Take Your Dog Fishing

Yummy!!

Yummy!!

Dogs are truly man’s best friend. I have a bulldog which has to go everywhere I go. My boat is parked at a boat dock in my back yard and George (my Bulldog) constantly lays around in the boat while it is parked at the dock. A few months back George was laying in the boat as usual and I decided to go fishing. I had never taken him out before. After loading my gear into the boat it was time to get George out and go fishing. This task was not as simple as it may seem. Regardless of everything I tried including a dozen treats, he was just not getting out of the boat.  So as not to waste anymore time I decided to take him with me.

I didn’t go far, as I did not know how George would react to riding in a boat. Would he jump out, run around the boat and fall out?? Actually quite the opposite, George sat on the passenger seat just like a typical fishing partner. He looked around at all of the new surroundings and seemed to enjoy the wind blowing through his cheeks as we ran to our destination.

As I arrived at my area and put the trolling motor  George decided he needed to check out the boat in more detail. He paced around sniffing everything as dog’s do. After he had finished surveying the boat it was time to direct his attention to the water. Even though he has been around the water he has never been out where there is no dry land right next to the boat. He starred in confusion for a while, then he noticed a duck in the water, then a bird landing on the other side of the boat. He was actually behaving much better than expected.

After about 30 minutes George decide to simply lay on the front of the boat and take a nap. Realizing he would not be frantically running around the boat and jumping in the water, I was now able to start concentrating on fishing. After a few minutes I had a fish on! George somehow woke up and ran up to the front of the boat wandering what was going on. As the fish was getting closer to the boat George could not hold back his excitement. He had never seen this before. At this point it looked as though he would be going overboard, he kept easing closer and closer to the edge of the boat. Then I landed the fish and George didn’t know quite what to expect.

I let George get a good look at the fish and he didn’t really seem all that excited about the bass. He simply grabbed the fish by the tail then immdeiately let go and lay back down on the deck of the boat and went back to sleep. The rest of the afternoon George basically slept, occasionally perking up when I caught a fish then back to sleep.

We finished up the day without incident. George now basically goes on all fishing trips, except for any tournaments or in the extreme heat. The only problem now is when he sees a rod in hand he races to the boat, sits down and won’t budge. If I want to go fishing without him I actually need to sneak out of the house without him realizing that I am going fishing.

What better way to spend a day fishing, a man’s best sport, with a man’s best friend.

I have a Rottweiller and she loves water and going fishing, at first she went after the fish but when she got a poke in the nose from a fin she didn’t mess with the fish again and she has been fishing with me many times since.

Great story. When my Norwegian Elkhound was alive I would take him fishing with me occasionally. He was pretty mellow and would usually lay around. However one time I believe he knocked my best rod and reel combo out of the boat without me noticing and I was never able to find it once I realized it wasn’t in the boat. Right now I have a black lab mix and chihuahua/terrier mix. I’ve taken both fishing and they both ended up going for swims, so I don’t take them anymore.

Thanks for the replies. The site is about a month old and has a lot of work to go. Am happy to exchange links and any other ideas can be shared by all. Thank you again.
George almost knocked one of my best outfits in, I was right there and able to grab it out of the water prior to sinking to the depths forever. Not surprised the lab went in. George loves the water but knows he can’t swim so he is pretty careful. Enjoy your fishing day
